The classical approach is a history-based, idea-oriented educational
model that exposes students to the great minds of the past through
literature, essays, philosophy, etc. It has been successfully used to educate
students for hundreds of years and has produced many of history’s
great minds.
Starting in the 2024-2025 school year, PWCA will be providing 2 learning options for students. One option will be the traditional school model with attendance four days a week. The other option will be a hybrid model of two in-class days and two at-home days per week.
Most Americans realize that the quality of public education has been declining for quite some time. This is especially true for American Christians. About a century ago the goal of American education was to foster a biblical worldview in its citizens, not only to lay biblical foundations for civic duty, but to educate biblically to lead children to Jesus Christ. The mission statement from Harvard in the 1600’s was “Everyone shall consider as the main end of his life and studies, to know God and Jesus Christ, which is eternal life. John 17:3.” Do you think Harvard has drifted from that mission! The philosophy of most modern educators promotes man at the center of existence, and therefore his happiness and equity are the end goal. Gone is the absolute truth. Gone is celebration of integrity and work ethic. Gone is a sense of sacrifice and looking to the future. Gone is the logic and beauty of mathematics. All replaced with relativism, tolerance, narcissism, temporal happiness, elevation of entertainment, shifting morals, and a strenuous effort to see to it that everyone gets a fair shake.
James and Carole Martin have raised 4 kids in Houston County since 2007. They live in the Grapeland school district and 3 of their 4 kids graduated from there. James has also served on the Grapeland School Board as trustee since 2015 and will complete his ninth and final year in May of 2023.
If you know James and Carole, then you know they are engaged, intentional parents who pay close attention to social and cultural changes in our society that impact not just their children but those of their church family as well.
They saw the covid pandemic had fast forwarded many of the negative cultural changes that were occurring in our county. In addition, social media was making the world smaller and cultural trends that once took months or years to arrive in our county were now arriving in minutes.
Our local schools were doing the best they could to keep many of the detrimental cultural trends out of the schools, but there is only so much they can do. Much of what a district can and cannot do is dictated from Austin or, worse yet, from Washington D.C..
The compromise for Christian parents sending their children to government schools has always been there, but lately parents are being asked to compromise even more. Christian parents often personally teach creationism to their children to counter the teaching of evolution in our schools, but the pandemic seemed to open the floodgates to transgenderism, homosexuality and critical race theory. Trying to counter all these topics can quickly become a full time job for a parent and it will likely only get worse.
So the problem was clear, but what could be done. Many Christian parents in our county were able to homeschool, but homeschool is not the answer for everyone. The solution it seemed was a school that matched Christian values and was under total local control. James heard of the excellent job that the Alpha Omega Academy was doing in Huntsville. They are a private Christian school providing a Classical education to their students.
James contacted Clint Allen (headmaster) at Alpha Omega. Clint was excited about the prospect of a school being started in Houston County and agreed to help in any way that he could.
James decided to have a kick-off meeting to explore the possibilities. The meeting was held at Grace Street church of Christ on March 31st, 2022. Clint and his team did a great job explaining to the attendees how Alpha Omega was started and how far they have come. James decided at the meeting to try to start the school and began assembling the Board. Our first Board meeting was held on June 22, 2022.
